2. How We Use Cookies
We categorise the cookies we use into three groups. Non-essential cookies (analytics and performance) are only activated with your explicit consent, as required by UK PECR regulations.
- Essential Cookies: Required for the website to function. These do not require consent under PECR.
- Analytics Cookies: Help us understand how visitors interact with the site. Require your explicit consent.
- Performance Cookies: Help us monitor stability and diagnose issues. Require your explicit consent.
When you first visit our site, a cookie consent banner will ask you to accept, reject, or customise your cookie preferences. You can change your preferences at any time by clicking the "Cookie Settings" link in the website footer.
3. Essential Cookies
These cookies are strictly necessary for the website to function and cannot be switched off. They are usually only set in response to actions you take, such as signing in or setting your privacy preferences.
- Firebase Authentication tokens: Used to maintain your signed-in session and verify your identity securely. These tokens are stored in your browser and are essential for accessing your account.
- Session management: Temporary cookies that maintain your session state while you browse the site. These are deleted when you close your browser.
- Cookie consent preferences: We store your cookie consent choice in localStorage so we do not ask you again on every visit. This is stored locally on your device and is not transmitted to our servers.
Legal basis: These cookies are exempt from consent requirements under PECR Regulation 6(4) as they are strictly necessary for the provision of the service you have requested.
4. Analytics Cookies
With your consent, we use Firebase Analytics (provided by Google) to collect anonymised usage data. This helps us understand which pages and features are popular and how users navigate the site.
Data collected:
- Pages viewed and time spent on each page
- Referral source (how you arrived at the site)
- Browser type and operating system (anonymised)
- Screen resolution and device category (desktop/mobile)
- Country-level location (city-level data is not collected)
- Feature interaction events (button clicks, form submissions)
Data retention:
Firebase Analytics data is retained for 14 months by default. We do not use this data to identify individual users. IP addresses are anonymised before storage.
Legal basis:
Consent (GDPR Article 6(1)(a)). These cookies are only activated when you explicitly consent via the cookie banner.
5. Performance Cookies
With your consent, we use Firebase Crashlytics (provided by Google) to collect crash reports and diagnostic information. This helps us identify and fix bugs to improve the stability and reliability of our services.
Data collected:
- Error messages and stack traces when crashes occur
- Device type, operating system, and browser version
- App/page state at the time of the error
- Anonymised user identifiers (not linked to your account)
Data retention:
Crashlytics data is retained for 90 days. Crash reports do not contain personal information and are used solely for debugging purposes.
Legal basis:
Consent (GDPR Article 6(1)(a)). These cookies are only activated when you explicitly consent via the cookie banner.
6. Third-Party Cookies
Some third-party services we integrate with may set their own cookies when you interact with their features:
Google Sign-In
When you sign in to Ascend using Google Sign-In, Google may set cookies to manage the authentication flow. These cookies are governed by Google's Privacy Policy. These are considered essential as they are required for the sign-in process you initiate.
Stripe Checkout
When you subscribe to a paid plan, you are redirected to Stripe's hosted checkout page. Stripe may set cookies to process your payment securely and prevent fraud. These cookies are governed by Stripe's Privacy Policy. We do not have access to or control over Stripe's cookies.
We do not use any third-party advertising cookies or cross-site tracking technologies. We do not sell your data to third parties.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time to reflect changes in the cookies we use or for regulatory, operational, or legal reasons. We will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page when we make changes.
If we make material changes to how we use cookies, we will reset the cookie consent banner so that you can review and update your preferences.
